The process of tattoo healing begins as soon as you walk out of a tattoo parlor. Above everything else, you need to take note and the tattoo aftercare instructions given to you and know that the very first few days in the healing timeline are very critical in promoting healthy healing and the lifetime preservation of your tattoo. Your tattoo may appear red and feel a bit sore while it heals – that is normal and should not be much cause for concern. After all, the tattooist had to cut through a total of three layers of your skin to ink your chosen design onto your body. It will therefore follow the same healing process as any wound.
The stages of tattoo healing
On the first week of the tattoo healing process, it is normal for you to experience sensations similar to that of sunburn in the tattooed area. It is also normal for you to experience minor discomfort and a bit of swelling. You may take over-the-counter pills to relieve at least some of the pain. During the second week of healing a tattoo, you can expect your tattoo to start peeling and flaking. The area that has been tattooed is also likely to feel itchy and dry. Whatever you do, DO NOT scratch the area or pick on the scabs! On week three, most of the scabs should already be gone, although the area is still likely to be sensitive while your skin goes through the complete tattoo healing timeline.

Remember that aftercare should be done for your tattoo immediately. This is the key to the proper healing process of tattoos and to prolonging its visual appearance. Among other things, you will need to keep the tattooed area as clean as possible. You should also make sure your clothes and your sheets are clean. No matter how itchy the tattoo gets at some point, you should refrain from scratching it or even touching it, as that will just prolong the tattoo healing process.
